Urban Golf Weekend returns to Miami: How Clifton Addison aims to increase Black representation on the course

What started out as a charity event in 2023 turned out to be one of Miami’s largest premiere experiences for golf enthusiasts. Now, the multicultural and lifestyle platform known as Urban Golf Weekend is returning to Miami this week, and its founder, Clifton Addison, says he couldn’t be prouder.

But before Addison built this immersive community organization, it was just him and his father swinging on the course.

Learning the game at 5 years old, Addison saw firsthand how golf could open doors to high-level connections, business and mentorship, often as the only person of color on the green. Now, through Urban Golf Weekend and its nonprofit foundation, he is leveraging those childhood lessons to redefine representation, build community wealth and expand access across South Florida — both on and off the fairway.

“I witnessed the power of the game, meeting Tiger Woods, politicians, businessmen, and it opened doors,” Addison said. “Those experiences inspired me to start.”
